ସ୍ଥାନ ଓ ସମୟ / Place and time
ଆଜିର ଓଡ଼ିଶାର ଏକ କାଳ୍ପନିକ ଛୋଟ ସହର ଓ ପାଖ ଗାଁ। ନିର୍ଦ୍ଦିଷ୍ଟ ଜିଲ୍ଲା ଧାର୍ଯ୍ୟ ନାହିଁ। ଏଗାର ବର୍ଷର ବେଣୁ ଓ ତା’ ବାପାଙ୍କ ସାନଭାଇ, ବାଉନ ବର୍ଷର ମାଧବ କକା। ମାଧବ ପୂର୍ବରୁ ପାଠାଗାର ସହାୟକ ଥିଲେ।
A fictional present-day Odisha town and neighbouring villages; no exact district is assigned. Eleven-year-old Benu and his father’s younger brother, fifty-two-year-old Madhab Kaka, a former library assistant.

ଭାବର ପରିବର୍ତ୍ତନ / The performance turn
ନିଜ ଗଣନା ଠିକ୍ ବୋଲି ଜିଦ୍ → ପାଦର ଫାଙ୍କ ଦେଖିବା → ତଫାତକୁ ଖେଳରେ ନେବା।
Insisting his count is right → noticing the space between steps → turning the difference into play.

ପୋଷାକ ଓ ଚଳନ / Clothing and movement
ବେଣୁର ଢିଲା ସବୁଜ ଛୋଟ ହାତର ସାର୍ଟ, ବାମ ଛାତି ପକେଟ୍‌ରେ ଛୋଟ ଖାତା, ବାଦାମୀ ହାଫ୍ ପ୍ୟାଣ୍ଟ ଓ ଚପଲ। ମାଧବଙ୍କ କ୍ରିମ୍ ସୂତା କୁର୍ତ୍ତାର ହାତ ମୋଡ଼ା; ସାଧା ଧୋତିରେ ସରୁ ମଳିନ ନୀଳ ଧାର। ବାମ କାନ୍ଧରେ ଇଟାଲାଲ ବହିଥଳି, ଡାହାଣ ହାତରେ ବନ୍ଦ ନୀଳ ଛତା। ବସିଲେ ଥଳି ଓ ଛତା ପାଖରେ ରଖିବେ। ଧୋତିର କୁଞ୍ଚ ଓ ତଳ ଧାର ବସିବା, ଚାଲିବାରେ ସ୍ୱାଭାବିକ ରହିବ। ଏହା ଚରିତ୍ରଙ୍କ ଦୈନିକ ପସନ୍ଦ; ଧାର୍ଯ୍ୟ ନଥିବା ଜିଲ୍ଲାର ନିର୍ଦ୍ଦିଷ୍ଟ ପୋଷାକ ବୋଲି ଦାବି ନାହିଁ।
Benu wears a loose green short-sleeved shirt, a pocket notebook at his left chest, brown shorts and sandals. Madhab wears a cream cotton kurta with rolled sleeves and a simply wrapped dhoti with a narrow dusty-blue border. Rust cloth book bag on his left shoulder; folded blue umbrella in his right hand. When seated, he sets both beside him. Keep the dhoti’s folds and hem plausible when sitting and walking. These are the characters’ everyday choices, not a claimed costume of an unassigned district.

ପ୍ରତି ଦୃଶ୍ୟରେ ମେଳ / Continuity between shots
ଏକା ଆରମ୍ଭ ଓ ଶେଷ ସ୍ଥାନ, ସମତଳ ଶୁଖିଲା ଅଗଣା। ଆଠ ଓ ବାର ଏହି କାଳ୍ପନିକ ଦୃଶ୍ୟର ଗଣନା; ଗଣିତର ଧାର୍ଯ୍ୟ ଅନୁପାତ ନୁହେଁ। ପୁଣି ଚାଲିଲେ ଲମ୍ବା ଓ ଛୋଟ ପାଦର ଫାଙ୍କ ଦେଖାଯିବ। ଛତା ଓ ଥଳି ବେଞ୍ଚରେ।
Same start and finish on a level dry courtyard. Eight and twelve are counts in this invented scene, not a fixed mathematical ratio. On the second pass show the different step lengths. Umbrella and bag stay on the bench.

ଦୃଶ୍ୟ 1 · 0–12 ସେକେଣ୍ଡ / Scene 1 · 0–12 seconds
ବେଣୁ ଓ ମାଧବ ଅଗଣାର ଗୋଟିଏ ଧାରରେ ଠିଆ। ଅନ୍ୟ ଧାରର ଖୁଣ୍ଟକୁ ଦେଖାଇ ବେଣୁ ଗଣି ଚାଲିବାକୁ କହେ।
Benu and Madhab stand at one edge of the courtyard. Pointing to a post at the other edge, Benu suggests counting their steps.
ଧ୍ୱନି / Sound: ଚପଲ ମାଟିରେ ଘଷା। / Sandals shifting on the ground.
ବେଣୁ: ଖୁଣ୍ଟ ଯାଏ କେତେ ପାଦ? ଗଣିବା।
Benu: How many steps to the post? Let’s count.

ଦୃଶ୍ୟ 2 · 12–26 ସେକେଣ୍ଡ / Scene 2 · 12–26 seconds
ଦୁହେଁ ଏକା ଶେଷ ସ୍ଥାନରେ ପହଞ୍ଚନ୍ତି। ବେଣୁ ନିଜ ଗଣନା କହେ; କକାଙ୍କ ଉତ୍ତର ଶୁଣି ଆଶ୍ଚର୍ଯ୍ୟ ହୁଏ।
Both reach the same finishing point. Benu gives his count, then looks surprised by Madhab’s answer.
ଧ୍ୱନି / Sound: ଶେଷ ଦୁଇ ପାଦ, ତା’ପରେ ଥମିବା। / The final steps, then stillness.
ବେଣୁ: ବାର। ତୁମର?
Benu: Twelve. Yours?
ମାଧବ କକା: ଆଠ।
Madhab Kaka: Eight.

ଦୃଶ୍ୟ 3 · 26–40 ସେକେଣ୍ଡ / Scene 3 · 26–40 seconds
ସେମାନେ ଆରମ୍ଭ ସ୍ଥାନକୁ ଫେରନ୍ତି। ବେଣୁ ଏଥର ମାଧବଙ୍କ ପାଦ ପାଖେ ନିଜର ଛୋଟ ପାଦ ପକାଇ ତଫାତ ଦେଖେ।
They return to the start. This time Benu watches Madhab’s longer step beside his own shorter one.
ଧ୍ୱନି / Sound: ଧୀର ଦୁଇ ଯୋଡ଼ା ପାଦଶବ୍ଦ। / Two sets of slow footsteps.
ବେଣୁ: ଓଃ, ତୁମେ ଏତେ ଦୂର ପାଦ ପକାଉଛ!
Benu: Oh! Your steps go that far!

ଦୃଶ୍ୟ 4 · 40–54 ସେକେଣ୍ଡ / Scene 4 · 40–54 seconds
ବେଣୁ ନିଜର ସହଜ ପାଦରେ ଚାଲେ। ମାଧବ ତା’ ପାଖରେ ଗତି କମାନ୍ତି। ଦୁହେଁ ଖୁଣ୍ଟ ଆଡ଼କୁ ଯାଆନ୍ତି।
Benu walks with his own comfortable steps. Madhab slows beside him as they head towards the post.
ଧ୍ୱନି / Sound: ସ୍ୱାଭାବିକ ପାଦଶବ୍ଦ ଓ ଛୋଟ ହସ। / Easy footsteps and a small laugh.
ବେଣୁ: ତୁମର ପାଦ ଲମ୍ବା। ମୋର ଗଣନା ଲମ୍ବା।
Benu: Your steps are longer. My counting is longer.
