The Small Bundle Concept and creative direction: Ahimanikya Satapathy Screenplay and pencil storyboard — first draft 2:34 · 16 shots Before her father sails, Malati holds back a small parcel to gain a little more time with him. When the family starts searching, she must say what she really wants. A fictional river landing in preindustrial coastal Odisha. A textile-trading family prepares for a voyage. No exact year, port or sailing route is assigned. A new fictional story written for this project against the background of Odisha’s boita and Sadhaba maritime tradition. It develops the earlier character studies ‘My Small Parcel’ and ‘Sit a Little Longer’ into a complete episode. A TASK OF HER OWN 01 · 00:00–00:08 · Morning at the landing Wide, steady establishing shot. The boita is moored, its sail furled. Hema folds cloth on a mat. Raghu lifts a large cargo bundle. Hari arranges a rope on the landing. Malati comes over to Hema. [No dialogue.] Sound: Soft water, cloth rustling and indistinct work sounds farther away. Performance: Let the preparation register before the first line. 02 · 00:08–00:18 · Give me a job too Medium two-shot of mother and daughter. Malati holds out her empty hands. Hema gives her a small open wrapping cloth containing three cloth samples. Malati: Ma, give me a job too. Hema: Give Bapa this parcel of cloth samples. Sound: The nearby work continues quietly. Performance: Hema genuinely entrusts her with the task. 03 · 00:18–00:27 · What the small parcel carries Over Malati’s shoulder, close on hands and samples. Malati studies the three samples: dark, light and one with a narrow border. Hema points out the samples. Malati: Such a little one? Hema: They’ll use these to choose their cloth. Sound: Soft cloth movement. Performance: Malati looks again, more carefully this time. 04 · 00:27–00:34 · She ties it herself Close on her hands, then her face. Malati brings the two ends together and ties the wrapping. Hema starts to help, then lets her finish it herself. Malati: I can tie it. Sound: The cloth tightens softly. Performance: A small, pleased smile. ONE MORE QUESTION 05 · 00:34–00:42 · Time to go Malati in the foreground; Raghu and the boat beyond. Hari is ready to board. Raghu finishes his task and holds a hand out to Malati. Her pleased smile fades. Hari: Raghu, I’ll wait aboard. Raghu: Malati, bring the parcel. Sound: Water, footsteps and a soft rope scrape. Performance: Her fingers tighten around the knot. 06 · 00:42–00:52 · The parcel behind her back Medium side angle: the audience can see the parcel behind her, Raghu cannot. Malati moves both hands behind her waist, hiding the small parcel with her body. Raghu stands in front of her. Malati: Are you going now? Raghu: Yes, sweetheart. Everything’s ready. Sound: A small breath before she speaks. Performance: She does not answer. 07 · 00:52–01:02 · One more question Over Raghu’s shoulder onto Malati’s face. Malati quickly finds a question. Raghu glances towards the boat’s shelter. Her hands remain behind her. Malati: Bapa, where will you sleep at night? Raghu: Inside the boita. Malati: And if it rains? Sound: The voices stay close; work sounds recede. Performance: The last question comes a little too quickly. 08 · 01:02–01:10 · Where is the parcel? Side two-shot; Hema turns in the background. Raghu answers, then notices his still-empty hand. Malati looks down. Hema turns from her work. Raghu: We’ll be under the shelter. Where’s the parcel? Sound: A pause after the question. Performance: The audience knows where it is; the adults still do not. THE PARCEL IS WITH ME 09 · 01:10–01:20 · The search begins Wider three-shot with Malati at one side. Hema lifts the folded cloth to look underneath. Raghu checks an empty basket nearby. Malati starts to speak, then stops. Hema: Did you put it under this cloth? Sound: The sound of unfolding cloth comes forward. Performance: Malati does not invent an answer; her silence prolongs the search. 10 · 01:20–01:28 · Her mother starts again Close side view of Malati and her concealed hands, with Hema’s reopened cloth beyond. Watching Hema undo the finished work, Malati loosens her grip on the knot. She looks at her mother’s hands, then towards her father. [No dialogue.] Sound: No dialogue. Cloth and quiet water. Performance: Let the decision become visible in her face and hands. 11 · 01:28–01:36 · It’s with me Medium close-up facing Malati. Before anyone points it out, Malati brings the parcel forward herself. Hema’s hands stop. Raghu turns towards her. Malati: I’ve got it. Sound: The work falls still. Performance: She keeps looking at the knot; there is more to say. 12 · 01:36–01:46 · What she really wants From Raghu’s side, close on Malati’s face and the parcel. Malati looks up. Her eyes are a little wet, but she does not collapse into sobbing. Raghu lets her finish. Malati: I wanted you to stay a little longer. Sound: Soft, clear speech; no swelling music. Performance: Leave two seconds before Raghu responds. BEFORE GOODBYE 13 · 01:46–01:55 · The work can wait a moment Medium-wide two-shot at the low bench on the inland side of the landing. Raghu takes the parcel and places it beside the bench. He sits and makes room for her. Malati sits alongside him. Raghu: Come. Let’s sit a while. Sound: The parcel settles; the bench gives a small creak. Performance: He gives her his presence without a lecture. 14 · 01:55–02:09 · Your stories and mine A quiet two-shot at bench height. They sit quietly, looking towards the river. Malati turns to her father. He looks at her and nods. The parcel remains beside the bench. Malati: Will you tell me your stories when you’re back? Raghu: And you’ll tell me yours. Sound: Only water for the first four seconds; leave another small pause at the end. Performance: A small smile returns. The sadness of parting has not vanished. 15 · 02:09–02:21 · Here, take it now One shot follows Malati rising, picking up the parcel and handing it over. Malati gets up herself, picks up the parcel and gives it to Raghu. Both are still ashore. He looks at the knot with a small smile. She releases her hands. Malati: Here. Take it now. Raghu: That’s a good knot you’ve tied. Sound: Footsteps and cloth; hold on the release after the lines. Performance: The handover is her choice. Raghu does not pull it from her. 16 · 02:21–02:34 · Two figures on the bank Wide rear view: Malati and Hema in the foreground, the boita moving away. A little later. Raghu and Hari are aboard as the boita slowly leaves the landing. Malati stands beside Hema and waves. Then she takes her mother’s hand. They keep watching the river. [No dialogue.] Sound: An oar moving through water. No final speech or spoken moral. Performance: Hold for four seconds after their hands meet, then gently end.
